The EcoFlow River 3 advertises an X-Boost mode that can run heating devices beyond its rated output, which leads many buyers to assume it can handle a small space heater on a cold night. It technically can switch one on. What it cannot do is keep it running long enough to matter. This article uses the River 3’s actual capacity to show how quickly a heater drains it, and then covers what a 245Wh battery can do to keep you warm.

Specs in context

The River 3 is rated around 245Wh with 300W of continuous AC output and a 600W X-Boost ceiling for resistive devices. Double-check the current listing for your region. After inverter losses, usable energy lands near 200 to 215Wh.

What X-Boost does to a heater

X-Boost lowers the voltage going to the device. A resistive heater at lower voltage simply draws less power and makes less heat. So a 1,500W heater plugged into the River 3 does not get 1,500W; it gets something closer to 600W at reduced voltage. It stays on, but it heats like a much smaller appliance.

How fast the battery empties

Heating device Power from station Runtime on ~210Wh usable
1,500W space heater via X-Boost ~600W effective ~20 minutes
Small 400W personal ceramic heater ~400W (X-Boost range) ~30 minutes
12V heated blanket ~35-50W ~4-6 hours
USB heated vest ~10-15W ~14-20 hours
Electric throw on low (AC) ~40-60W ~3.5-5 hours

Twenty minutes of reduced-output heat is barely enough to warm your hands. For comparison, running a 1,500W heater for one hour on the grid uses 1.5kWh, about seven times the River 3’s entire usable capacity.

The better approach: personal heat

A 245Wh battery is ideal for heat that goes directly into your body instead of into the air. Wearable and bedding heaters use a tiny fraction of the energy of a space heater, and they work even in a cold room.

Winter outage kit built around a River 3

  • A 12V heated blanket plugged into the car outlet for sleeping, which avoids AC conversion losses.
  • A USB heated vest or gloves for moving around the house.
  • LED lanterns rather than lamps, drawing 5 to 10W each.
  • A closed-off small room, towels at the door gap, and wool layers.

With that setup, the River 3 can realistically support one person through a cold night and still charge a phone in the morning.

Why personal heat is so much more efficient

A space heater has to raise the temperature of every cubic foot of air in the room and then keep replacing the heat that escapes through glass and walls. A heated blanket only has to warm a thin layer between you and the fabric, and your own body heat does part of the work. That is why 40W under a blanket can feel warmer than 600W trying to heat a drafty bedroom. For two people, one dual-zone 12V blanket still stays under roughly 80W, which the River 3 can carry for two to three hours at a time, enough to get warm before sleep and then switch off.

Cold-weather battery care and safety

LiFePO4 chemistry discharges fine in the cold but must not be charged below about 32°F. If the River 3 has been in a cold garage or car, let it warm indoors before recharging. Keep it away from any heater’s airflow and at least three feet from open flames or heating elements.

Never use a fuel-burning heater, grill, or generator indoors to make up for limited battery power. Carbon monoxide builds silently. If you run a generator to recharge the station, place it outdoors at least 20 feet from the house, with exhaust directed away from doors and windows, never in a garage or on a porch. And do not attempt to power house circuits by plugging a station or generator into a wall outlet; only a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician is safe.

FAQ

Will running a heater damage the River 3?

X-Boost is a supported feature, so short heater use should not harm it. Repeatedly draining to zero at maximum output does add wear, and the fan will run loudly. It is simply a poor use of the battery.

What size power station runs a space heater for a few hours?

To run a 1,500W heater for three hours you need about 5kWh of usable energy and an inverter rated at 1,800W or more. That is the large home-backup class, not a portable River-size unit.

Bottom line

The River 3 can run a space heater for about twenty minutes at reduced output thanks to X-Boost, which makes it the wrong tool for room heating. Pair it with a 12V heated blanket or USB heated clothing and it becomes a genuinely useful winter backup. Check the current spec sheet for exact limits, and keep all combustion heaters and generators outdoors.
