For CPAP users, the best backup is one that requires no action in the middle of the night. When the grid drops at 3 a.m., the machine should simply keep running. The Bluetti AC180, with roughly 1,152Wh of storage, is large enough to cover several nights of CPAP use and supports pass-through operation as a basic bedside UPS. This guide covers runtime, how to test the switchover, noise considerations and the quirks of using a power station on the nightstand.

This is general power guidance, not medical advice. Discuss backup plans and any settings changes with your clinician and equipment supplier.

Runtime by setup

Confirm capacity against Bluetti’s current spec sheet. Bluetti’s runtime formula for the AC180 assumes about 90% depth of discharge, roughly 85% efficiency and some self-consumption. Rough results:

Configuration (8-hour night) Average draw Energy per night Nights on AC180
CPAP, no humidifier ~35W ~280Wh ~3-3.5
CPAP with humidifier on low ~55W ~440Wh ~2
CPAP with heated humidifier + heated tube ~95W ~760Wh ~1.2
Two CPAPs, no humidifiers ~70W ~560Wh ~1.6-1.7

A manufacturer DC cord plugged into the 12V port avoids inverter losses and idle draw and can add roughly 10 to 20% more runtime.

UPS: what to expect

With the AC180 plugged into the wall and the CPAP plugged into the AC180, the station passes grid power through. When grid power fails, it switches to battery. Bluetti lists the AC180’s switchover as a UPS function; check your version’s spec sheet for the stated switchover time. Most CPAP power supplies ride through short gaps, but machines differ.

The pulled-plug test

  1. Plug the AC180 into the wall and the CPAP into the AC180.
  2. Start the CPAP and put on the mask, or run it with the mask on a pillow.
  3. Unplug the AC180 from the wall.
  4. Check whether the CPAP kept running, restarted or showed an error.

If the CPAP restarts but you are asleep, it may not resume therapy automatically. In that case, look into the machine’s auto-start setting or consider a dedicated online UPS for medical equipment.

Bedside practicalities

Noise

At CPAP loads, the AC180’s fans are typically quiet or off, but they may run when the battery is charging quickly. Choose a standard or silent charging mode in the app for overnight use. Bluetti lists a quiet charging mode for this unit; keep the unit on the floor a few feet away to further reduce noise.

Light

Display screens and indicator LEDs can be bright in a dark room. A piece of low-tack tape over indicators, or turning the screen off via settings, helps light-sensitive sleepers.

Battery longevity

Keeping a battery on constant pass-through at 100% ages it faster. If your version supports a charge limit, setting it around 80 to 90% still leaves multiple nights of reserve.

Longer outages

  • Add solar; a 200W panel on a clear day can refill much of a night’s use.
  • Consider an expansion battery if outages lasting several days are common in your area.
  • If you recharge with a gas generator, run it outside at least 20 feet from the house, away from bedroom windows, never in a garage or on a porch, and keep battery-backed CO alarms near sleeping areas.

A bedside setup checklist

  • Place the AC180 on the floor within reach of the CPAP cord, with vents unobstructed.
  • Keep the humidifier chamber and water bottle on a separate surface above the unit.
  • Label the DC cord and AC brick so others in the household can set it up if needed.
  • Enable any app notification for low battery so you get warned before it runs out.
  • Repeat the pulled-plug test every few months and after firmware updates.

One more practical point: write the CPAP’s measured overnight usage on a label on the AC180. When a storm is forecast, anyone in the household can glance at the label and the battery display and know how many nights of therapy are available without opening the app.

FAQ

Is the AC180 overkill for a CPAP?

For a CPAP alone, a smaller unit may suffice. The AC180’s advantage is flexibility: it can also run a fridge, lights and phones during an outage.

Can I bring the AC180 on a plane for travel CPAP use?

No. At more than 1kWh, it far exceeds airline battery limits. Use an FAA-compliant CPAP battery for flights.

Bottom line

The Bluetti AC180 can power a CPAP for roughly one to three and a half nights, depending on humidification. Test its UPS switchover with your machine, use a DC cord if possible and manage noise and light, and it makes a practical bedside backup.
