A space heater is one of the few household appliances that can fully use the Bluetti AC180’s output. The AC180’s 1,800W inverter can run a typical 1,500W heater at full power, and its Power Lifting mode handles higher-wattage resistive loads by reducing voltage. The limiting factor is battery size: with about 1,152Wh, the AC180 can only sustain a heater for a little over half an hour on high. This guide shows how thermostat cycling, heater choice and a few techniques can stretch that meaningfully.
Spec context
Confirm against Bluetti’s current spec sheet: roughly 1,152Wh of LiFePO4 storage, 1,800W continuous AC output and a Power Lifting mode around 2,700W for resistive loads such as heaters, kettles and hair dryers. The unit accepts expansion batteries in supported configurations.
Runtime depends on how the heater cycles
A heater running on high without cycling is a constant 1,500W load. But most heaters have thermostats that switch the element off once the room reaches the set temperature. In a small, well-sealed room, a heater may run only 30 to 50% of the time once warm.
| Heater mode | Average draw | AC180 runtime (~950Wh usable) | With B230-class expansion (~2.7kWh total usable) |
|---|---|---|---|
| High, no cycling | 1,500W | ~38 minutes | ~1.8 hours |
| Low, no cycling | 750W | ~1.3 hours | ~3.6 hours |
| Low, thermostat cycling ~40% | ~300W | ~3.2 hours | ~9 hours |
| Oil-filled radiator, 700W, cycling ~40% | ~280W | ~3.4 hours | ~9.6 hours |
The difference between 38 minutes and three hours comes almost entirely from room size, insulation and thermostat setting.
Techniques that stretch runtime
Choose a heater with a real thermostat
Heaters with digital thermostats cycle more precisely than those with a simple dial. An oil-filled radiator stores heat in its oil and releases it after the element cycles off, which smooths out temperature swings.
Heat a small space
A 100 square foot room needs far less energy than a 300 square foot living room. Pick the smallest room people can comfortably share and close it off.
Set a modest target
Setting the thermostat to 62°F instead of 70°F can cut run time in half or more, especially on very cold nights. Add layers and blankets for comfort.
Add a heated mattress pad
For sleep, switch from the heater to a heated mattress pad or blanket drawing 50 to 100W. That alone can take the AC180 through most of a night.
Safety
- Plug the heater directly into the AC180; avoid thin extension cords and power strips.
- Keep three feet of clearance from bedding, curtains and furniture; use a unit with tip-over and overheat shutoff.
- Never use outdoor fuel-burning heaters, grills or camp stoves indoors. Keep CO alarms on every level of the home.
- If you recharge with a gas generator, run it outdoors at least 20 feet from the house, never in a garage or on a porch, with exhaust directed away from windows and doors.
- To run a gas furnace blower instead, which heats the whole house with fuel, have a licensed electrician install a proper inlet and transfer switch or interlock. Never backfeed through an outlet.
Cold battery care
LiFePO4 batteries should not be charged below freezing and lose some capacity when cold. Keep the AC180 in the heated room. If it has been in a cold car, let it warm to room temperature before charging.
Measuring your room’s heat loss
You can estimate how hard a heater will need to work with a simple test. On a cold evening with grid power, close the door of the room you plan to use, run the heater on low until the room reaches your target, then note how long it runs versus how long it rests over the next hour. If it runs 20 minutes per hour, it averages about 250W on a 750W setting, giving the AC180 roughly three and a half hours. If it barely rests, the room loses heat too fast; add draft-proofing before counting on the battery.
FAQ
Can the AC180 run a 2,000W heater?
With Power Lifting, it can supply resistive loads above 1,800W by lowering voltage, but the heater will produce less heat and drain the battery quickly. A 1,500W or smaller heater is the better match.
Can solar power a space heater through the AC180?
Not in a meaningful way. The AC180’s roughly 500W solar input is only a third of a heater’s draw, and winter sun is weak.
Bottom line
The Bluetti AC180 can run a 1,500W space heater for about 40 minutes on high, but thermostat cycling in a small, sealed room can stretch that to three hours or more. Use it for targeted warmth and switch to heated bedding for sleep.
