This is the question where portable power stations disappoint people most. A standard 1,500-watt space heater will drain a 1,000Wh station in roughly 30 to 40 minutes. On its 750W low setting, you might get an hour to an hour and a quarter. Heat is simply the most energy-hungry thing you can ask a battery to make. Here’s the math, what else a 1,000Wh station can do to keep you warm, and when you need a different plan.
The numbers
| Heating device | Power draw | Heat output | Runtime on 1,000Wh (~850Wh usable) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Space heater, high | 1,500W | ~5,100 BTU/hr | ~30-35 min (if the inverter can carry it) |
| Space heater, low | 750-900W | ~2,600-3,000 BTU/hr | ~55-70 min |
| Small ceramic / personal heater | 200-400W | ~700-1,400 BTU/hr | ~2-4 hrs |
| Electric blanket (queen, mid setting) | 50-100W avg | Direct body heat | ~8-15 hrs |
| Heated mattress pad | 40-80W avg | Direct body heat | ~10-20 hrs |
| Heated vest / jacket (USB) | 7-20W | Direct body heat | 40+ hrs |
One kilowatt-hour of electricity becomes about 3,412 BTU of heat, whatever device converts it. A resistive heater isn’t wasteful. A 1,000Wh battery just doesn’t hold much heat energy compared with a gallon of propane (about 91,500 BTU) or gasoline (about 114,000 BTU).
Can the inverter even run it?
Before runtime, check output. 1,000Wh-class stations range from about 1,200W to 2,000W continuous. Units at the low end can’t run a 1,500W heater on high at all. They’ll shut off on overload. Some offer a power-lifting mode that runs resistive loads at reduced voltage, so the heater produces less heat but keeps running. Either way, running at or near the inverter’s limit makes the station hot and the fan loud.
Heat the person, not the room
The efficient way to stay warm on battery power is to heat your body directly. An electric blanket or heated mattress pad uses 5-15% of a space heater’s power, and delivers warmth right where you need it. For a winter outage night, a 1,000Wh station can run a heated mattress pad all night and still have capacity left for phones and a lamp in the morning. Combine it with a warm sleeping bag rated for the room temperature, a hat, and layers, and a cold bedroom becomes survivable.
Short bursts of space heat
If you must use a space heater, use it tactically. Run it on low for 15-20 minutes to take the edge off a small room before changing clothes or settling a child to sleep, then switch to a blanket. Close the door and hang a blanket over drafty windows. A 100 sq ft room with the door shut warms noticeably in 15 minutes. A great room with a vaulted ceiling won’t.
When you need real heat
If your home depends on electric heat, a 1,000Wh station is not a heating solution. Options include:
- Gas furnace with a powered blower: the blower and controls need about 400-800W. A 2,000Wh+ station or a generator can run it, heating the whole house with gas.
- Fuel generator for a space heater: a 3,000W-class inverter runs a 1,500W heater for about 10-13 hours on a tank. It must stay outside, at least 20 feet from the house.
- Indoor-rated propane heaters: only models specifically certified for indoor use, with oxygen depletion sensors, used exactly as directed and with CO alarms operating.
Never bring a camp stove, charcoal grill, or outdoor propane heater indoors for warmth. They’re leading causes of winter carbon monoxide deaths.
Cold-weather battery care
A cold room affects the station too. LiFePO4 batteries deliver somewhat less capacity when cold and should not be charged below 32°F unless the unit has built-in self-heating. Keep the station in the warmest room in the house, off cold floors, and don’t leave it in a freezing car or garage. Sodium-ion stations handle cold better, which is useful in unheated spaces, but still follow their stated operating range.
FAQ
Can a 1,000Wh power station run a 1,500W space heater at all?
Only if its continuous rating is 1,500W or more, and even then for just 30-35 minutes. Many 1,000Wh-class units are rated below 1,500W and will shut off.
What’s the best heater to use with a power station?
An electric blanket or heated mattress pad. At 40-100W, it runs all night on 1,000Wh and keeps you warmer than a space heater would for 30 minutes.
Bottom line
Expect about 30-40 minutes on high and around an hour on low from a 1,000Wh station running a space heater. Use the battery for electric blankets and heated pads instead. For real space heating, power a gas furnace’s blower or run a generator outdoors.
